Friday, June 15th, 2018, Face2Face was invited to participate in the Chicago peace rally and march alongside The B.R.A.V.E. youth group of St. Sabina Ark, March For Our Lives, Change the Ref and Gabby Giffords. The event included performances and speeches by Jennifer Hudson, will.i.am, and Chance The Rapper to an audience of an estimated 4000.
We had one of our mobile billboard trucks leading the march and produced hundreds of oversized double-sided posters featuring victims of everyday gun violence from the community, held by The B.R.A.V.E. youth group. The backsides of the posters featured a quote from student activist, Trevon Bosley who tragically lost his brother, Terrell, who was shot to death in front of a church; “Everyday Shootings Are Everyday Problems”. This saying was chanted throughout the rally and came through loud and clear on social media with our posters being photographed by marchers. Terrell Bosley and Veronica Moser were featured on one side of the truck, and Joaquin Oliver and Courtlin Arrington on the other, representing unity around the fight against gun violence.
What was quite different about this activation from the NRA weekend is that the purpose was not to challenge people on Friday, but to unify and raise awareness of the everyday gun violence that is rampant in underserved communities. As of June 10th, 1,138 people have been shot just this year alone in Chicago, and 213 killed according to Chicago Tribune data. With the Parkland student survivors and MFOL Chicago chapter students in attendance, the event drew a diverse crowd from all over making for a night of peace and unity in the South Side community.
