February 14th marked the one year anniversary of the horrific mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Manuel & Patricia Oliver (parents of Joaquin Oliver 8/04/01 - 2/14/18 and founders of Change The Ref) delivered a colossal sized Valentine’s Day card that was unforgettable. We teamed up with Colossal Media, an award winning, Brooklyn based outdoor company to bring to life Manuel’s original artwork. After four days of painting, the artwork looked like a generic Valentine’s card featured below:
On the 14th, Valentine’s Day, we held a press conference with Emma Gonzalez of March For Our Lives, Susan Sarandon, and other known activists. We held it in an event space with floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the mural. The painters returned to add a new addition to the mural while the press conference was going on, a two-story high AR-15 and the number 17 to commemorate the seventeen lives lost that day. A slide show with gun violence statistics were projected on a larger than life digital billboard below the mural throughout the day.
